Ephesians 2: It’s Not Because We’re Good… It’s Because He’s Merciful

Do you ever pause and ask yourself, “Who am I really?” We often try to find our identity in our careers, our relationships, our roles, our accomplishments—or even our failures. But none of those things define us in God’s eyes.

Ephesians 2 gives us a clear and powerful reminder: our identity is not rooted in what we’ve done, but in what Christ has done for us.

“But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.”

— Ephesians 2:4-6 NLT

Let that sink in: We were dead.

Not just a little broken or slightly off course—we were spiritually dead in our sins. But God, in His rich mercy and great love, didn’t leave us there.

He gave us life.

He raised us up.

And He seated us with Christ in heavenly places.

This means our position isn’t just here on earth, struggling to “be good enough.” Our identity is now in Christ—secure, loved, chosen, and alive. We didn’t earn this. We didn’t deserve this. It’s not because we were good. It’s because He is merciful.

So many people try to build their worth on shifting sand—on the approval of others, on success, on appearances. But God offers something better: a solid identity based on grace, not performance. When we understand who we are in Christ, it changes how we live. We stop striving to earn God’s love and start living from a place of being deeply loved.

Do you understand what that means?

You are seated in heavenly places with Christ—not someday in the distant future, but right now. You are spiritually raised, spiritually secure, and spiritually alive.

Let this truth shape your Monday through Saturday, not just your Sunday.

Reflection Question:

Where have you been trying to find your identity outside of Christ—and how would your life change if you fully believed you were already seated with Him?
