The miracles of God have been on my mind lately. Elevation has a song called A Million Little Miracles, led by Joe Barnes… 1, 2, 3, I can’t even count them all! It makes me think about the big miracles too—because let’s be honest, I’m in need of one, and I’m sure you are too. But how do miracles happen? What are they exactly, and how do we experience one?

What Is a Miracle?

According to Dr. Tony Evans, “a miracle is a situation where God suspends or transcends the natural order of things to produce a desired result in a crisis—a supernatural intervention that requires no human cooperation.”

He contrasts this with a blessing, which is when God works through the natural order of things and requires our cooperation to achieve a beneficial outcome.

That means a miracle is God stepping in and doing what only He can do—something completely beyond our ability. A blessing is still powerful, but a miracle shows His direct hand, unexplainable apart from Him.

Why Elijah Inspires Me

This curiosity led me to Elijah. I love Elijah because we know so little about his background. We don’t know his genealogy; all we know is that he was a Tishbite from Gilead. Yet, we know he knew God. In 1 Kings 17:1-7, we see this clearly—Elijah spoke exactly what God told him to speak and went wherever God told him to go.

The Spiritual Climate of Elijah’s Day

To understand Elijah’s miracles, we also need to understand the times he lived in. Israel was under the reign of King Ahab, who, along with his wife Jezebel, led the nation deeper into idolatry. They built altars to Baal, the so-called “god of rain and fertility,” and encouraged the people to worship him instead of the Lord. The land was filled with false gods, false prophets, and false promises.

It’s in this climate of spiritual darkness that Elijah declared there would be no rain except at his word (1 Kings 17:1). This wasn’t just a random drought—it was a direct challenge to Baal. While the people trusted an idol for rain and provision, God was about to show them that He alone controls the heavens and provides for His people.

That’s why Elijah’s miracle of provision—being fed by ravens and drinking from a brook—was so powerful. It wasn’t just about food; it was a declaration that the Lord is the true source of life in a land chasing false gods.

The Journey Ahead

In this series, we’re going to journey through the life of Elijah and reflect on the miracles God performed through him. Each miracle reveals something unique about God’s power, provision, and presence. Together, we will:

  • Detail the miracles and discover fresh insights.

  • Journal about the unexpected ways God provides in our own lives.

  • Pray that God will open our eyes to see His miracles happening around us right now.

This isn’t just about looking back at Elijah’s story—it’s about recognizing how the same God still moves today.
