Discovering My God Identity

Text
Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

My God Identity is the understanding and acceptance of who I am according to God’s design, knowledge, and purpose — not the world’s opinion, my past mistakes, or my personal feelings.

Introduction

Discovering who we are is an important part of becoming. When we discover, we become open to something new—something unfamiliar, often unimaginably awesome, shaping the very core of our identity. The text for today is amazing because it opens our eyes to a key part of discovering our God Identity.

Today, we focus on God’s response to Jeremiah: “Before I formed you, I knew you!” What does that mean? Could it be that before you were even designed, God knew every detail about you—who you were to be, who you are to become, and even where you will go? God’s knowledge of us is endless. The puzzling thing is that we are not born knowing who we are in Him. We begin to discover that, and today we will focus on the fact that God already knows us before we know ourselves.

Point 1: Real Discovery starts with God!

Often, we look to people, places, and things to shape who we are. We try to fit into the boxes society sets, shaping ourselves into artificial forms of what others perceive as “normal.” But we were never meant to be like the world. We were made to exist in the world but not be consumed by it—to have our own identity as God’s workmanship in the earth.

We struggle to figure out who we are because we don’t start with God. Often, we ask everyone else first and God last—even though He knows everything. Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 6:33:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Point 2: Focus on what God knows!

God told Jeremiah that He knew who he was before he was even formed! He knew Jeremiah’s purpose, his destiny, and what he was to become. Today, we must ask God to show us what He already knows about us.

It’s our responsibility to set aside what we think we know about ourselves and focus on what God has called us to be. Discovering our God Identity means pushing aside unbelief, hurt, anger, stress, and anything that obstructs our understanding of who God has made us to be.

Point 3: Accept the identity that God has given us!
Our lives won’t make sense until we accept what God has ordained for us. Accepting our God Identity allows us to live in alignment with God’s unique plan, walking with confidence, clarity, and spiritual authority. It helps us reflect His character authentically and brings fulfillment and peace, knowing we are living as the person God created us to be.

Conclusion/Demonstration: Pop the Balloon Demonstration
Remember, God already knows who you are. He formed you with purpose, shaped you with destiny, and called you before anyone else ever called your name. Discovering your God Identity is not about becoming new to Him—it’s uncovering what He’s already placed inside you.

Just like this balloon, many of us carry false identities, past mistakes, and the weight of others’ opinions. When we release and pop those false identities, we make room for God’s truth to fill us. Accepting your God Identity allows you to walk in freedom, purpose, and confidence, knowing that the One who formed you has already ordained your steps.
