“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalm 91:1 (NKJV)

Today, I went for a run. The sun was blazing hot and unforgiving. As I moved, two things caught my attention and stirred something deep in my spirit.

First, I noticed how different the temperature felt when I stepped under the shadow of a tree. Just a few steps out of the sun, and the heat eased. The shade brought relief and peace.

The second thing I saw was my baby sitting in the stroller. She had her little fan blowing and her sunshade up. Her face was cool to touch, and her hair gently moved with the breeze. In contrast, my skin was hot from the sun.

And it hit me: this is exactly what it’s like to be under the covering of God.

When we dwell in the secret place of the Most High—when we remain close to Him and trust in His protection—there’s a shift in atmosphere. Just like the natural shadow shields us from the scorching heat, God’s presence covers us from the spiritual heat of life—stress, confusion, fear, and weariness.

Under the Shadow, There Is Rest

The Bible tells us that in God’s shadow, we find rest. Psalm 121:5-6 says,

“The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.”

Out of the shade, life feels heavy. We get irritable, overwhelmed, and spiritually fatigued. But under His shadow, there is peace, clarity, joy, and direction. There is grace to endure hard things, wisdom to avoid wrong paths, and comfort in the middle of chaos.

A Parent’s Protection

When I noticed the sun still peeking into my baby’s stroller and hitting her face, I immediately reached down and covered her with something more protective. She didn’t have to ask. She didn’t even know what was coming—I just did it because I love her.

If I, as a mother, go to those lengths to protect my child, how much more will our Heavenly Father cover us when we stay near to Him? (Luke 11:13)

What the World Calls “Missing Out”

To someone who doesn’t know God, staying in the secret place may look like you’re missing out. You’re not in the spotlight. You’re not chasing what the world calls “fun.” But what they don’t realize is that staying in God’s shadow is where the real protection and blessing are.

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” — Psalm 84:11

He protects us not just from danger, but also from what we think is good but is harmful. He reshapes our desires. He helps us endure the hard things with supernatural strength.

So… Are You Under the Shadow?

Now, when I run and see the sun, I don’t just keep going in the heat—I look for shade. I run to it. Spiritually, I’ve made the same decision. I’m running to the shadow of the Almighty.

Every single day, we’re faced with the choice to walk in our strength or rest under His shadow. And just like shade on a sunny day, His presence changes everything.

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Let’s pray:

Lord, teach us to run to You. Help us to dwell in Your secret place daily, not just during hardship. Let us remain under Your shadow, where we are covered, protected, and filled with peace. Thank you for being our shelter, our shade, and our strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
