Read 1 Kings 17:1–6
Elijah declared that there would be no rain, then went to a place where he would be fed by ravens. Think about that—he was being fed by birds! These weren’t obedient pets; these were wild birds sent by God to provide for him daily. He even drank from a stream until it dried up, because he had said there would be no rain until God commanded it.
What’s striking about this miracle is that it wasn’t luxurious. Elijah wasn’t in the king’s palace eating grapes and drinking wine. He went to the desert—a dry, desolate place—where God provided for him. And that’s exactly the point: God’s miracles often come in the spaces He chooses. They may not look glamorous, but they are exactly what we need.
God of the Impossible
Elijah’s story reminds us that God is not limited by what we see. Who would have thought He could use unclean birds to bring food every morning and evening? Yet that’s exactly what He did. This tells us something about God—He delights in doing the impossible. He provides in ways we would never imagine, and He proves that nothing is too hard for Him.
And this isn’t the first time we see this type of unlikely provision. God fed the Israelites with manna in the wilderness. Manna literally means, “What is this?” Every single day, He gave them what they needed, in the exact measure they needed, and they never went hungry. What seemed small—just bread from heaven—was actually a massive miracle.
Why does God perform miracles? So we and others can know that He alone is God. His provision always points back to His presence and His power.
Position Yourself to See Miracles
Here’s the key: we experience miracles by being in God’s presence and listening to His Word. Just like Elijah, we position ourselves to see God move when we spend time with Him, tune our hearts to His voice, and obey His instructions—even when they don’t make sense at first. Miracles aren’t random; they flow naturally from faith and alignment with God’s will.
Testimony of Provision
I’ve experienced this kind of unlikely provision in my own life. When I was in college, I received a scholarship from the most unexpected source.
One day, while waiting in line to get my student ID, someone cut in front of me, which delayed me longer than expected. I left the student center with my ID in hand—only to “accidentally” bump into an old friend of my mom’s.
He asked me about my grades and whether I had a scholarship. I explained that I had applied but hadn’t received a response yet. Without hesitation, he walked me straight into the scholarship coordinator’s office. That day, I was awarded more scholarship money than I had even applied for—enough to cover tuition, books, and more. I walked away without having to pay a dime for school.
Looking back, I see God’s fingerprints all over that moment. What felt like a delay in line was really divine positioning. God provided for me in an unlikely place, just as He did for Elijah by the brook.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who provides in ways I could never imagine. Open my eyes to see the miracles around me each day—whether small or great. Teach me to stay in Your presence, to listen to Your Word, and to trust You fully, even in dry places. May my life be a testimony that You alone are God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
