Topic: Discovering My God Identity
My God Identity is the understanding and acceptance of who I am according to God’s design, knowledge, and purpose — not the world’s opinion, my past mistakes, or my own feelings.
Text — Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
Introduction
The main character of today’s message is Jeremiah. He began his ministry at a young age, most likely in his late teens or early twenties. Jeremiah was from a small town just outside Jerusalem — the town of Anathoth. It’s the ancient version of saying, “I’m from Houston,” when you actually live in Sugar Land, Stafford, or Missouri City (laugh).
We know Jeremiah was young because in the original Hebrew text, before being translated into English, a specific word is used: “NA’AR.” This word means a young man or teenager — not a child, but not yet a full adult. So scholars estimate his age range based on that word.
Why does this matter?
Because Jeremiah was still developing — physically, emotionally, and socially. Just like today’s youth, he faced pressures and expectations about how someone his age “should” act. Culture tried to label him. Many of you know what that feels like — the pressure to be popular, to look perfect, to succeed, or the weight of your mistakes.
Jeremiah even voices this pressure in Jeremiah 1:6 (NLT) when he says:
“O Sovereign Lord, I said, I can’t speak for You! I’m too young!”
Jeremiah responded to God based on what culture told him — but God does not follow culture’s limits.
Point 1: Your Design Is Not Random
Life is full of random moments — running into an old friend, finding money on the ground. But one thing that is notrandom is your design.
God knew exactly:
-
what He wanted you to do,
-
who He wanted you to become,
-
and how your life would unfold…
before He formed you.
Your struggles, your pain, your mistakes — God uses all of it to help you discover your God Identity. The very moments you thought would break you are the ones that pushed you closer to God. Without them, you wouldn’t understand how important your identity in Him truly is.
Point 2: You Are Called by God
God has specifically chosen and called you for His purpose. With Jeremiah, God gave both an invitation and an assignment. You get to choose whether you answer the invitation — but when you do, an assignment comes with it.
Calling and assignment always go together. If God has called you, then there is something He has placed you on earth to accomplish.
Point 3: God Knows You, Sanctified You, and Ordained You
God intentionally leads you to discover your God Identity because He Himself designed you with purpose and promise.
-
He sanctified you: He set you apart for His use — not the world’s.
This is why you don’t always fit in. You were never meant to blend in. -
He ordained you: This means He appointed you, positioned you, and entrusted you with a mission in His kingdom.
