Discovering My God Identity – Part 4
Scripture: Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
What is My God Identity?
Definition:
Your God Identity is the understanding and acceptance of who you are according to God’s design, knowledge, and purpose—not the world’s opinion, your past mistakes, or your personal feelings.
Introduction
We live in a world that constantly tries to define us. Social media tells us to be one way, school and peers push another expectation, and even family has its own ideas of who we should be. Sometimes, when you look in the mirror, you don’t even recognize yourself.
Jeremiah 1:5 reminds us that knowing who we are in God is essential. Without this foundation, the world will try to give you an identity that doesn’t align with your purpose. Before Jeremiah ever preached, God had to clarify who he was—because your identity in God determines your impact on the world.
What Set Jeremiah Apart?
In Jeremiah’s time, many prophets preached what people wanted to hear, offering comfort instead of correction, popularity instead of truth.
Jeremiah, however, spoke from his God-given identity. He preached with purpose, not trends. He knew who he was in God—and that made all the difference.
Why I Need My God Identity
1. The World is Loud
Jeremiah lived in a culture filled with competing voices. Without God’s clarity, he could have been drowned out.
The same is true for us today. When your identity is unclear, culture shapes you, people label you, and comparison drains you. Knowing your God Identity allows you to stand firm in who God created you to be.
2. Purpose Demands Clarity
Jeremiah wasn’t just born—he was sent. God appointed him. You cannot walk in your calling while pretending to be someone else. Understanding your God Identity gives you clarity to live out the purpose God designed uniquely for you.
3. God Identity Gives Courage in Hard Times
Jeremiah faced rejection, loneliness, and immense pressure. His identity in God gave him the strength to stand firm. Knowing who you are in God provides confidence, backbone, and courage when life gets difficult.
Conclusion
Without a God-centered identity, we risk becoming whatever the world says we should be. Jeremiah teaches us that true identity is discovered in God—not apart from Him. You are known, set apart, and appointed before birth.
Student Activity: The Mirror Moment
Objective: Help students see themselves through God’s eyes.
-
Invite one student to stand in front of a large mirror.
-
Ask: “When you look at yourself, what’s the first thing you usually see?”
-
Connect their answer to Jeremiah’s challenges and the false labels the world gives.
-
Read Jeremiah 1:5 and explain that God sees them differently than they see themselves.
-
Ask the student: “Now, tell us one thing God sees when He looks at you.”
-
Have the group declare together: “I choose God’s identity over my reflection.”
-
Close with the reminder: “The mirror shows your reflection, but God shows your identity.”
