Some mornings, you open your Bible and… if we’re honest… it feels a little slow. That was me reading through the lineage in 1 Chronicles. Name after name, generation after generation. Faithful history—but not always the most exciting to read.
And then suddenly… something shifts.
Right in the middle of a long list of names, two verses interrupt the pattern:
“There was a man named Jabez who was more honorable than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful. He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!’ And God granted him his request.”
— 1 Chronicles 4:9–10 (NLT)
A Pause in the Pattern
Out of nowhere, God highlights one man: Jabez.
No long backstory.
No detailed accomplishments.
Just this:
- He was honorable
- He prayed
- And God answered him
That’s it.
In the middle of what feels ordinary—even boring—God inserts a reminder:
He still sees individuals. He still responds to faith.
A Simple, Bold Prayer
Jabez didn’t pray a complicated prayer. He simply asked:
- “Bless me”
- “Expand my territory”
- “Be with me”
- “Keep me from trouble and pain”
And here’s the part that stops you:
“And God granted him his request.”
No delay mentioned.
No conditions listed.
Just… answered.
What This Means for Us
Sometimes we think:
- “Does God really care about my requests?”
- “Is this too small to pray about?”
- “Should I only ask for spiritual things?”
But this passage reminds us—God cares about you, personally.
Just like a parent provides for their children, God is attentive to His own.
He is not distant. He is not annoyed by your asking.
He invites it.
Out of Nowhere
What stood out most to me is how this moment appears unexpectedly.
In the middle of routine…
In the middle of the ordinary…
In the middle of something that didn’t seem significant…
God moved.
And that’s how He often works.
A Prayer for Today
Today, I’m praying this over you:
That out of nowhere, God grants your request.
That the thing you’ve been holding in your heart…
The need you haven’t fully put into words…
The desire you’ve been hesitant to bring before Him…
He sees it. And He cares.
So ask Him.
Boldly. Honestly. Faithfully.
Because the same God who answered Jabez…
is still answering prayers today.
Have a beautiful day. And don’t hesitate to ask God for what you need—He cares about you more than you know.
