Prayer Topic #2:

A Prayer for the City of Houston Elections

Scripture Reading:

Psalm 106:1-5, I Timothy 2:1-6

Reflections of the Heart:

Paul admonishes all Christians are to pray for people in authority so that our lives may be peaceful.  Do not think it is insignificant to pray for the elections of our city.  The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much!

Scriptural Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for our great nation.  Thank You for the democratic process of our nation.  Thank You for the right to vote.  Thank You for the authority to expect change through prayer.  Thank You for giving us the wisdom, discernment and knowledge to pray for the elections.  We give thanks to You and proclaim Your greatness.  To You will we sing songs of praise and tell everyone about Your wonderful deeds.  We exalt Your holy Name.  The earth is Yours Lord, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to You.  You laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.  Royal power belongs to You, Lord, You rule all nations.

Magnificent Father, let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done during the elections throughout this country.  Your Word states that we are to pray for kings and all people who are in authority, so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives that are marked by godliness and dignity.  We know that this is good and acceptable in Your sight.  In obedience to Your Word, we intercede for the elections.  We decree that the political election process will yield to Your plans.  Father, You hold the heart of the king in Your hand and You will turn it in the direction that You choose.  In Jesus’ Name, we crush the demonic devices that are being designed to stir up negativity, cynicism, and hopelessness among our voters. We command, peace, be still within the campaigns.  We declare that the unexpected will prevail and each candidate will address the issues, take the “high road,” and inspire voters.  As a nation, we will not be destroyed for lack of knowledge, but we declare that each voter will educate him or herself on the issues and the candidates and vote intelligently.

Holy Spirit, help me to look past the rhetoric and media spin and show me which candidate I am to vote for:

Holy Spirit, touch the hearts of every political candidate and guide them by Your power.  We also submit to You, any school board candidates and every local proposition on a ballot.  Increase Your spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, courage, might, and knowledge within each candidate. We do not know what their level of commitment is to You, but we ask You to communicate with them on behalf of Your people. Equip them with everything they need to do Your will and produce in them, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to You.  Father, dispatch Your angels to guard and protect their families and destroy every assignment that the devil devises against them.  Father, we know that nothing is too difficult for You.  Miraculously, unite the Body of Christ in our city, and show us who is Your person for the next two years.

Everlasting Father, please have mercy upon us and forgive our nation for its many sins.  Forgive us for making “self” the center of our American culture.  Forgive each candidate for his or her sins.  Forgive them for trusting in their own abilities instead of trusting in You.  Forgive them when they do not consult with You before making decisions or administering their authority and power.  Forgive them for the times they have not been fair, compassionate, or understanding as public servants.  Forgive them when they are being people pleasers and not God pleasers.   Forgive us, the Body of Christ, for not praying for our leaders consistently.  Forgive the citizens who refuse to exercise the privilege to vote, yet complain about our leadership.  Lord, forgive me for (list any sins that you have committed.)  Holy Spirit, remind our candidates of those they need to forgive and help them to be quick to forgive.  As for me, Holy Spirit, bring to my remembrance those I need to forgive. (Take a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal names or faces of people that you may need to forgive. As He reveals them, say “I forgive name of person(s).” Now, trust the Lord to heal any wounds in your soul caused by unforgiveness.)

Holy Spirit, help our candidates not to yield to temptation; but deliver them from the evil one.

Lord, You are the eternal King, Your rule is everlasting.  All the people of the earth are nothing compared to You.  All of Your acts are just and true.  You alone have held the oceans in Your hand.  You measured the heavens with Your fingers and know the weight of the earth.  The Lord God Almighty is Your Name.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
